Osu!

English]

The 7th piece for the upcoming exhibit at Namiki Gallery, starting on November 13th;

  • Osu! (2-piece set)

  • Acrylic and paper on canvas Each 100 x 100 mm, 2024

In March, I had the chance to speak with a karate player, which inspired me to create artwork on this theme. As I looked into karate further, I learned that the white belt, which all beginners start with, symbolizes both humility and limitless potential that come with being inexperienced. I found that idea very inspiring. The way a beginner clenches their fist with an earnest “Osu!” is endearing, while the more appropriately relaxed “Osu!” of an advanced Karate practitioner embodies a calm, focused mastery. That's why these two pieces are a set.

This set captures the determination of a beginner eager to improve and the composure of a seasoned Karate practitioner who has learned where to concentrate their energy. I feel this approach is important not only in karate but also in any endeavor. Though the paintings are simple, I carefully painted them with subtle differences in posture and the use of color around each figure to express these contrasting attitudes. 🔍️👀
